Why we upgraded the brakes on our Jeep JK
The stock JL brakes needed improvement, so we went looking for options. To understand why we chose the path we took, you first need to understand our Jeep and how we use it. At 6440 lbs, our Jeep is HEAVY! In Fact, we once weighed it at 7,360 lbs fully packed for a 9 day trip with spare fuel, water tanks full, and both of us inside. This alone is reason to upgrade the brakes, then there's how we use it too.

We push this heavy Jeep both on and off the road. It never goes on a trailer, and sometimes tows one. We drive it from northern California to places like Moab Utah, Colorado, Montana, Hammers etc. These trips include some serious mountain passes where poor brakes are simply not an option. We also use the Jeep for some fairly serious off-road trails including the Rubicon, and many of the 6 & 7 rated trails in Utah like: Moab Rim, Poison Spider, and Kane Creek. There are many places along these routes where brake failure would almost guarantee death. Below we'll cover all the options we considered, what we picked, why, and the parts needed for the upgrade. Comparing The Available Jeep JK Big Brake Kits
During our original quest for brakes and axles, we stumbled on a smoking deal on a Pair of Dynatrac axles (PR44+HP60). They were already equipped with the Teraflex big brake kit JK setup front and rear, that many people run, so we installed them with the axles. This setup served us well for a few years, and while decent, ultimately wasn't what we wanted long term.

As time went on, I did some heavy research into brakes, and considered many options. We looked at kits from PowerStop, Baer, Brembo, Willwood, Teraflex, Dynatrac, Alcon, Ksport, and others. While some of these kits were very enticing, they weren't the right choice for our Jeep.
Reasons for NOT going with a big brake kit
Price and replacement parts availability steered us away from many of these kits. Spending massive cash on a setup that would likely be hard to service in 10 years seemed unwise. It is very common for aftermarket companies to stop supporting parts way too early. Just look at how many great JK products have been dropped by their manufacturers.
Another reason to skip many of them was durability in adverse conditions. The JK comes with normal floating calipers, which tend to work surprisingly well when a wheel bearing is failing. Fixed calipers with opposing pistons can be VERY frightening when you have wheel bearing play. The rotor knocks the pads back enough that your first stab at the brakes results in a pedal on the floor without stopping the vehicle. I've personally experienced this with Wildwood calipers and a failing wheel bearing on my VW years ago. While you should replace wheel bearings at the first sign of failure, this could be the difference between driving off the trail, or needing to haul parts in to fix it on the spot.

This is my 1986 GTI which experienced the pad knock-back issue due to a bearing failure - not terribly surprising.
Another issue is master cylinder displacement. Many of the kits don't address this at all, or say it'll be fine. I can tell you first hand - that is very subjective. The Teraflex documentation for the brake kit we ran stated that they were OK on late JKs equipped with the 1.0625" master cylinders – I disagree. We installed that setup on ours and didn't like it at all. The brake pedal would travel far too low, and the only thing that made them acceptable was upgrading to a 1.125" J8 master/booster combo. Even then, the pedal travel was a little long.
Finally there's wheel fitment. Many of the kits require wheels greater than 17" in diameter. Many also require spacers or some unknown amount of clearance to not hit the backside of the wheel spokes. Here you can see how close the rear JT Gladiator brakes are to the 17" wheels on our JK:

Looking at the JL/JT Gladiator for and OEM option
In the past, we've borrowed from various models to upgrade our VWs, and the Jeep JK Wrangler is no different. As it turns out, the brakes from any of the JL Wranglers, or JT Gladiators can be used on a JK with minor modifications. With Jeep offering higher gross vehicle weights and tow ratings on these, it is only reasonable they come with better brakes than the JK.
There are essentially 3 brake packages offered across the various trims of JL/JT. Each of these is an upgrade over what the JK comes with stock, and each of them will bolt right up to the JK with only a little trimming to the front backing plates. Price, availability, and use case will dictate which of them is right for you, but in our case - a HEAVY rig that sees hard use means we decided on the biggest of these 3 options.
JK brakes vs the 3 JL/JT options
The smallest of these is base JL brakes. These use 12.99" front rotors that are .94" thick, - that's a 9% larger rotor, though it is a little thinner. The rears use 12.91" solid rotors - a 4% larger diameter and the same thickness as the JK. The front calipers have 6% more piston area than the JK, and the rear has 12% less. If you can find these parts super cheap, don't want to upgrade your master cylinder, and don't need a big upgrade - this could be a great choice.
The next step up is the JL Sahara/Rubicon. These use 12.99" front rotors that are 1.1" thick, - that's a 9% larger rotor, the same thickness as the JK. The rears use 13.46" solid rotors - 8% larger diameter and 17% thicker than the JK. The front calipers have 19% more piston area than the JK, and the rear is the same area as the JK. This might make a great fit on a 2-door, or a 4-door that is fairly light – especially if you find a full set at a great price.
The biggest setup – the one we went with, is that of the JT Gladiator and JL 4XE. These use the same 12.99" front rotors as the JL Rubicon/Sahara that are 1.1" thick, a 9% larger diameter, and same thickness as the JK. The difference is the rear, where the JT uses 13.58" vented rotors - 9% larger in diameter, and 83% thicker than the JK. The front calipers have 19% more piston area than the JK, and the rear is 13% more. The pads in this setup are also massive, with the front pads roughly 26% greater area than the JK, and the rear 33% greater.

Acquiring parts for the JK to JL/JT Brake Upgrade:
There are several good ways to get all the parts you need to do this upgrade. We got exceptionally lucky and found a VERY low mile JT Gladiator setup for a smoking $200, while on a trip to Las Vegas. This meant all we had to buy new was brake parts lubricant and brake fluid. A much more common scenario involves finding used parts that would benefit from new pads and rotors. The third option is buying everything new.

My best guess is that you likely don't have much interest in the smallest JL brake package unless it is nearly free, complete, and in good enough shape to just swap on and run, so I'll only dig into the full parts lists of the two bigger brake packages here. Both versions use the same 12.99" front brakes, so we'll cover that once, and then provide the details on both rear brake packages separately.
Most likely you'll find used JL/JT calipers/adapters and want new pads/rotors, so I've broken each list into 3 parts. The first is the pad/rotor options I'd use if mine weren't almost new when we did the install. You'll find options there for just one end of the rig, and kits that do both front and rear. I've had very good luck with PowerStop parts in the past, so that's what I've linked to. The second is the consumables needed for the job - including the exact parts I used. The third is the OEM MOPAR part numbers for everything involved.

Installing the JK to JT Big Brake Setup
Installing this upgrade is a piece of cake - other than trimming the front splash shields, it's a direct bolt-on upgrade. Also, yes, the parking brake drum portion of the rear rotor is just like the JK, so there is nothing needed to make your parking brake work. How We Like This JT Big Brake Setup
We've only had this setup on the Jeep since July 5, 2026, but we have done numerous abusive stops with it. I really like how the brake pedal is a little bit taller than it was with the Teraflex big brake kit we removed, and there was no loss in stopping power with the smaller front pistons. I think this is most likely due to the much larger pads up front. I had a little bit of concern the rear might want to lock up before the front with how big that upgrade is, but the ABS seemed to control locking both front and rear as needed, and it does not seem the rear bias was too much. This makes sense as our Jeep is rather heavy, and the 4XE uses this exact same brake package - an indication the engineers who designed it found this front/rear bias ratio to be correct on a heavy Wrangler.
I'll come back here in the future to share how this setup performs long-term once we have more serious miles and abuse on them, but until then, I'm very happy with the JT Gladiator brakes on our JK.
